Percutaneous mitral valve and related interventions
Published on 21 May 2025
The Percutaneous Mitral Valve and Related Interventions Service treats patients with valvular heart disease to improve the symptoms and quality of life for those presenting with signs of cardiac failure.
The Edinburgh Heart Centre provides this service from within the Royal Infirmary Hospital of Edinburgh.
What are mitral valve interventions?
The service currently offers three procedures: balloon mitral valvuloplasty, paravalvular leak closure and left-atrial appendage occlusion. All procedures are minimally invasive. They are undertaken using a catheter-based technique to correct disorders of the mitral valve and related structures.
Patients considered to be of high operative risk can receive these procedures in preference to open surgical treatment.
