We'll cover the costs of treatment or care for patients with some very rare conditions from pooled funds.
We manage a number of national financial risk share schemes on behalf of NHSS boards. These allow NHSScotland to pool funding across the country, so that boards can share the financial impact of any unpredictable expenditure for very rare cases that require high cost interventions and drugs.
Every board contributes a proportion of the costs from an agreed list of treatments. Without these schemes, an individual health board could face significant financial risk.
The range of therapies we cover with these arrangements is reviewed by NHS boards annually.
