Prior Approval Reform – Overview

Dental Reform – Prior Approval for General Dentistry

PCA(D)(2026)2 outlined changes to Prior Approval for General Dentistry due to a high volume of treatment plans with low clinical risk being submitted for prior approval following the introduction of Dental Reform. To reduce delays in necessary treatment and to simplify administrative processes for dentists providing low-clinical-risk care, the Scottish Government is replacing the existing financial trigger for prior approval in General Dentistry with one based on clinical criteria. This will take effect from 1 November 2026.

We will continue to publish articles about this change and the status of this project in the Monthly Schedule Communications.
